4 Things for Women to Consider When Choosing a Boxing Gym

You are currently viewing 4 Things for Women to Consider When Choosing a Boxing Gym

Real boxing training at a certified USA Boxing registered club (the governing body of amateur boxing) is a great benefit for women of all ages. Many competition boxing facilities don’t have some of the luxuries that boutique, no-collar gyms, have. Air conditioning, towels, clean mats for everyone, and a separate women’s restroom are not available at many of the serious gyms. Cost is one reason, but there is also a method to some of the madness. Fighters are created in hot, no-frills gyms where the only thing one may sense is the intangible nature of hard work.

Even if you’re not looking to be a real boxer of any sort, these 4 things are important factors to consider in choosing a boxing program.

1. Does the gym/trainer develop competition fighters?

Even if you’re not looking to compete or even step in the ring, this is an important way to comb through the numerous “no collar boutique gyms” that are not equipped with the tools to teach the proper learning process.

2. Are women encouraged to integrate with men at the beginning stages of boxing?

Boutique gyms that do not foster the true development of boxers and the culture of training tend to keep everyone segregated. It’s arguably pandering to women afraid of the real experience, but the process of boxing is safe and allows people of all demographics to decide for themselves without being lied to.

3. Is there a program at your gym dedicated for just women?

This might shock you, but if so, women at your gym might be getting bamboozled and treated too differently from everyone else. There shouldn’t be segregation for women who may be inspired to do the hard work everyone else is doing. Better gyms might have women’s aerobic boxing as an option, but women will be encouraged to train alongside anyone and everyone.

4. Does your boxing program have a separate class for women’s self-defense

Boxing, by definition, is a martial art, so having a self-defense boxing program is just a money grab.

Ultimately, a boxing program for women has the same benefits for anyone: it’s a life skill that will teach you about yourself. The motor skills, techniques, and tactics in boxing are very particular, so going to a boxing program that is involved in the sport will be the best decision for all women.
